Mum’s the Word

Following a week of festivities in honour of International Women’s Day and Mothering Sunday here in the UK, we thought it only right to dedicate some love to all those fantastic mothers out there preparing (and fretting perhaps) behind the scenes, as their beloved daughters prepare to tie the knot.

Our Quintessentially Weddings Teams all around the world care passionately about holistically caring for the whole family in the lead up to a wedding. Especially ensuring that mothers aren’t just involved in the pre-wedding process, but that they actually feel deeply connected to their daughters throughout.  We’ve put together a canny compilation gathered from the heaps of information provided by our global Quintessentially hubs in London, Paris and New York. This blog is all about that and so without further ado, get comfy because here are our favourite luxury experiences to be absolutely shared with the Mother-of-the-Bride, as you approach your Big Day.

Bespoke Perfume Designing

Most, if not all of us, have that one scent that triggers fond, and sometimes powerful memories to come rushing back without warning. There’s nothing like it. Memory recall is most strikingly engaged through our sense of smell, lodged in the limbic system, and so wearing the same perfume as your mother on your special day could potentially make for a lifelong set of memories. Why not treat your mum to a bespoke fragrance workshop with you? You’d both learn from the expert ‘noses’, spend time together in gorgeous surroundings, and take home your very own fragrance, encased in a beautifully engraved bottle. All ready to wear on your wedding day. The ultimate Mother-of-the-Bride keepsake experience.

To live the best kind of olfactory immersion, the Quintessentially Weddings Team in London thoroughly recommends a fragrance session with Royal Perfumers, Floris, London’s oldest perfume retailer, founded in 1730.  For one, you’ll be retracing the steps of beauty icon Marilyn Monroe, the world’s most famous screen goddess who commissioned Floris to create her a series of very special signature scents.

You can also flex your creative muscles and tailor this experience with your mother in many different locations around the world, wherever you may be or wish to be. Sophie Fleming, Quintessentially New York, suggests visiting MCMC Fragrances in Brooklyn to design your luxury perfume. Using only the finest ingredients, MCMC will take you on an olfactory adventure as you conceive your perfect wedding day fragrance.

Colour-to-Skin-Tone Matching

Finding the ideal outfit for your daughter’s wedding can be a stressful task – especially if you’ve no idea what you’re looking for. It doesn’t have to be that way though. Why don’t you bust that stress and inject some fun into your shopping expedition? It’s easy and to this end, Quintessentially suggests brides-to-be accompany their lovely mums to a private colour matching experience. Not only is it light-hearted mother-daughter bonding, but it will also help your mother to feel totally confident in her wedding outfit.  As our friends at Red Leopard say: “It is remarkable how different colours affect our complexion; the correct shades have the power to make you look healthy, capable, credible and radiant.”

In this colour matching experience, you and your mother will discover which colours compliment your skin tones, be it an ivory white, or an eye-popping peacock blue. This most enlightening day is sure to leave you both looking and feeling your absolute best.

Private Flower Arranging Masterclass

But the pre-wedding magic needn’t stop there. Quintessentially has seen some of the most stunning, successful results come from mother-daughter floral-related experiences. You can hone your skills or perhaps even learn a whole new art, as a team of floral experts teaches you to create your own timeless floral pieces, at a day-long workshop. Topped off with a delicious afternoon treat. What’s not to like?

In London, our Weddings Team would highly recommend Philippa Craddock, deemed the ‘Queen of Florists’, for such an experience. The bouquet lesson and workshop will take place in her East Sussex studio nestled in the heart of the countryside, after which you and your mum will be served a gourmet lunch by none other than a Yotam Ottolenghi-trained chef. We’re tempted to sign up ourselves!

A Dress Fitting Followed by Afternoon Tea

Experience a private fitting with a top wedding designer, followed by a Mother-Daughter Champagne Afternoon Tea. The dress fitting is a moment to be cherished and so we recommend you really make a day of it, especially if it involves champagne!

In London, we believe that there is no venue more apt for this particular experience than The Wedding Gallery. The sumptuously appointed underground coves are crammed with high-end designer dresses, lingerie, jewellery, as well as floristry and catering ideas. Everything you could possibly need from start to finish, to complete your wedding journey in style.  Once you’re happy with the dress fitting, take some time to relax in The Club and sample a few specialist teas and cocktails together. The Wedding Gallery is usually a members-only space, however, Quintessentially has secured exclusive access especially for our valued brides-to-be and their mothers.

To really make the best of this, Quintessentially New York recommends you visit L’Fay Bridal, where you both will be greeted by a world-class designer and treated to refreshments throughout. Perfection.

Bespoke Macaron Flavour Development with Pierre Hermé

Meanwhile, across the channel, Quintessentially Paris reveals that French brides tend to plump for special tastings with their mums. So how about taking that tasting to the next level and creating your very own flavours for your wedding reception or dinner? You’ll have a truly personal say in the tastes and textures your wedding guests will get to enjoy on your Big Day, and that’s a rare opportunity.

We suggest a bespoke ‘macaron-flavouring’ course with macaroon Master Pierre Hermé in Paris. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from the crème de la crème (pun intended) and develop your very own flavour of macaron. This can then be used on your cake, or as little parting favours for your guests.

Relax, Refresh, Rejuvenate

Our wedding teams around the world know how brides are super keen to indulge in a few pampering sessions with mum before their special day. And rightly so. The idea of stealing a quiet moment with mum in a luxurious, serene spa tucked away from the rest of the world, plotting as you relax, is one we love here at Quintessentially Weddings. Mums love it.

In Paris, the Quintessentially Weddings Team suggests visiting the luxury spa at The Peninsula, for an exquisite Parisian lunch followed by a top spa treatment, and unlimited access to the spa facilities.

Here in London, we recommend a private Yoga session at the top of The Shard with one of Britain’s leading instructors from Yogasphere. You and your mother will have the chance to stretch out and relax together, bust some of that wedding planning stress and – more vitally – reconnect ahead of your big day.

Take a look at our pre-wedding wellness blog for more relaxing, pampering experiences to share with your mother.
